John Gray of Neptune had to travel an hour-plus just for marijuana until Friday when Verano Holdings opened its Zen Leaf location.

As employees, township officials, and residents celebrated Friday the grand opening of Neptune’s first medical marijuana dispensary, one patron gave some thoughtful reasons for being among its initial customers.
He was fed up of spending an hour driving back and forth from Breakwater dispensary, where he’s been purchasing medicinal marijuana to treat his back injury, which left him partially paralyzed with numbness in both hands and legs.
He anticipates this to change now that Zen Leaf dispensary has opened nearby: it should save both time and gas costs for him. “I’ll save myself both,” he noted.
He also expressed hope that Zen Leaf dispensary would become one of the few licensed to sell recreational marijuana as well, though that requires approval by both the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission and Neptune’s Zoning Board. Verano Holdings – which operates Zen Leaf brand – has yet to announce when or if they plan on offering sales to those without medical cards.

On the first day of recreational marijuana sales in New Jersey, many lined up at Elizabeth Zen Leaf Dispensary to become its inaugural customers. Governor Phil Murphy held a press conference there as one of 13 locations offering adult-use cannabis sales to both medical users and recreational users alike.

State law permits social equity dispensaries to operate within 1,500 feet of non-social equity adult-use cannabis stores; however, OKAY Cannabis’ application could mean they open on Chicago and Howard before Zen Leaf can. As a result, Zen Leaf would need to relocate somewhere within the city.

Zen Leaf opened their Neptune dispensary on April 16th – making them the fourth dispensary since Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law adult-use cannabis in February. Serving medical marijuana patients who had to travel over an hour for their cannabis supply from Eatontown (which was their nearest dispensary), Zen Leaf serves them both.
Neptune Verano sells products similar to those sold at other Verano locations. Their menu consists of flowers, prerolled joints, edibles and vape cartridges; as well as topical salves that provide direct bloodstream absorption and relief.
The Neptune store, situated on U.S. Route 1 North in Neptune Township and sharing its parking lot with a supermarket, offers both medicinal and recreational marijuana sales for customers aged 21 or over with valid state ID cards to make purchases there. Furthermore, discounts are extend to veterans, seniors and disabled customers.
Zen Leaf’s inaugural Pennsylvania dispensary opened for business in Wynnewood through NSE Pennsylvania LLC. Situated in Montgomery County – which boasts the third most populous population – it reopened its doors at 9 a.m. Friday with an expanded selection of medicinal and adult-use cannabis products.
